The City Court of Baker was established by L.R.S. 13:2488.21. Its territorial jurisdiction extends throughout the city of Baker. The court is composed of the Judge, Mark Plaisance, the Clerk of Court, Delbra Pointer, the City Marshall, Sid Gautreaux, and other personnel that are necessary for the proper operation of the court.
The city court processes civil, criminal, and traffic matters. The types of civil claims include personal injury, contract, and landlord-tenant cases up to $25,000, as well as small-claims cases of $3,000 or less. The type of criminal cases handled by the court are misdemeanor offenses which are generally punishable by a fine of not more than $1,000 and/or a jail term of not more than six months.
The city court also serves an extension of the EBR Parish's Clerk of Court in that citizens are able to obtain marriage licenses and other limited services at the clerk's office.
The court operates its own adult probation department. This department provides a structured correction and crime prevention program that seeks to reduce the number of repeat offenders, which is accomplished by intensive supervision, treatment, and education of offenders.
